COVID-19 Central Asia Update
Update on tours:
You will have all heard about the DPRK closing its borders for tourists in the wake of COVID-19 spreading globally, but what isn’t being spoken about as much is its effects on YPT’s other destinations.
While Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have continued business as usual, Turkmenistan has gone down the same path as North Korea and taken some extra precautions.
Firstly, no East/South East/North East Asians will be granted letters of invitation in the near future. This affects even those countries which have the situation under control, such as Singapore.
Secondly, the land borders between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan/Iran are now closed, which will prevent any overland travel in the short term future. The border with Afghanistan was already closed, so this was unaffected, while the boat from Baku to Turkmenbashy seems to be going ahead as usual.
Several public events, including international football matches, have been cancelled due to COVID-19.
At the moment this doesn’t affect our next tour as everyone is able to arrive and leave from Ashgabat as its only a tour of Turkmenistan, however it may affect our future tours which are in combination with the other Central Asian Stans if the land borders remain closed.
Don’t worry though, if you are booked on one of those tours we’ll still make it work, it’ll just mean we would need to fly between Turkmenistan and their neighbours rather than crossing overland, but then again the show must go on!
