Hội An – Ancient City
by Andy Khong
Hội An is a city in central Vietnam, located on the coast of the South China Sea. It has a rich history and a well-preserved Old Town that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was an important trading port during the 16th and 17th centuries, and its architecture reflects a blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and European influences.
The Old Town of Hội An is pedestrian-friendly, and visitors can explore the narrow streets and alleyways lined with historic buildings, temples, and pagodas. Some notable landmarks in the Old Town include the Japanese Covered Bridge, the Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese Congregation, and the Quan Cong Temple. Hội An Lantern Festival takes place on the 14th day of every lunar month where the town trades its electric lights for traditional coloured lanterns.

In addition to its historic sites, Hội An is also known for its beautiful beaches, including An Bang Beach and Cua Dai Beach. Visitors can swim, sunbathe, and enjoy water sports such as surfing, snorkelling, and scuba diving.
Hội An is also famous for its cuisine, which features a blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and European flavours. Local specialties include Cao Lầu (a noodle dish), Bánh Mì (Vietnamese sandwich), and Cơm Gà Hải Nam (Hainanese Chicken Rice).

Finally, Hội An is known for its shopping, particularly for its tailor-made clothing. Visitors can have custom clothing made for a fraction of the cost in other countries. Hội An is also a great place to buy souvenirs such as silk lanterns, ceramics, and wood carvings.
Overall, Hội An is a charming and historic city with a lot to offer visitors, including rich history, beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine, and unique shopping opportunities.
