Rottnest Island: World’s Happiest Animal Found!
by Andy Khong
Rottnest Island was discovered by Dutch explorers in the 17th century, and it was named “Rotte Nest” (meaning “rat’s nest”) due to the presence of quokkas, a small marsupial found on the island.
Rottnest Island is located off the coast of Western Australia, 18 kilometres (11 miles) west of the capital Perth. It is known for its picturesque landscapes, stunning beaches, and diverse wildlife. The island covers an area of about 19 square kilometres (7.3 square miles), and is surrounded by crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean.

Historically, Rottnest Island has great cultural significance to the Noongar (Aboriginal) people, the traditional owners of the land. Today, Rottnest Island attracts visitors from around the world who come to enjoy its natural beauty and recreational activities. The island offers over 63 stunning beaches and 20 bays, making it a haven for swimming, snorkelling, surfing, and fishing. The pristine waters surrounding the island are home to vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, including dolphins, sea turtles, and tropical fish, making it a popular spot for diving and underwater exploration.
One of the unique features of Rottnest Island is its abundance of quokkas. These small, friendly marsupials have become an icon of the island. Visitors can often be seen taking selfies with quokkas, which are known for their friendly and curious nature, hence the label of being the “World’s Happiest Animal”.

The island is car-free, and the main mode of transportation is cycling. Visitors can rent bicycles on the island to explore its many attractions and scenic trails. Rottnest Island is also home to historical sites such as the Wadjemup* Lighthouse, the Rottnest Island Museum, and several former military installations that date back to World War II [*Wadjemup = In the Aboriginal Noongar language means ‘place across the water where the spirits are’].
Accommodation options on the island range from basic camping grounds to luxurious resorts. There are also restaurants, cafes, and a general store to cater to the needs of visitors.
To reach Rottnest Island, visitors can take a ferry from several locations along the Western Australian coast, including Perth, Fremantle, and Hillarys Boat Harbour. The journey takes approximately 25-45 minutes depending on the departure point.
Overall, Rottnest Island offers a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and wildlife encounters, making it a popular destination for tourists seeking a getaway in Western Australia. Escape to Island Bliss… Rottnest beckons you!
