How to Survive as Vegan in Bhutan?
Bhutan is one of the most misunderstood and unique travel destinations in the world. It is certainly one of our favorite places in the world to visit, but can you survive as a vegan in Bhutan? The short is yes, you can be vegan in Bhutan quite easily.
In fact, in some ways, Bhutan is one of the most vegan-friendly countries on earth. Here’s the skinny on veganism in Bhutan.
Bhutanese Religion and Culture
Bhutan is a staunchly traditional Buddhist nation. Therefore vegetarianism or veganism are far from alien concepts. In fact, vegetarianism in Bhutan is so entrenched that there are no slaughterhouses in the whole country. Some people eat meat imported from India, but for most citizens of Bhutan, being vegetarian is the default position, rather than being the odd one out.
Bhutanese Food Has Flavour
Perhaps it is the Indian influence, but every single meal comes with rice and chilis. Yes, every meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The spice is said to heat people up during the colder months.
Best Vegan Dish in Bhutan?
Veggie Momos (dumplings), which are either steamed or fried, are probably the most delicious vegan food offering in the country. Similar in texture to Chinese dumplings, they go famously with a local Panda beer for that full Bhutanese-Vegan experience. Thus Bhutan street food is also some of the most vegan friendly too.
Is Bhutan Vegan Heaven?
In some respects, Bhutan is probably not only the most vegan/vegetarian-friendly country on the planet, but also one of the most environmentally friendly ones too. Aside from the organic food, Bhutan has almost no carbon footprint too.
