North Korean Window View: Bicycles
“There’s a world out there. Open a window, and it’s there” – Robin Williams
On tour, you will find yourself spending quite a bit on time on the bus, particularly if the DMZ is a part of your itinerary since it is located at the bottom of the country. If so, it is highly recommended that you try your best to get the window seat, so you can sit back and witness the landscape and some of the most intimate moments of everyday life in the DPRK.
If you talk to anyone about visiting the North, you’ll likely hear the phrase “you only see what they want you to see” and whether you believe that or not, there is certainly no monitoring what you see out the window. For most tours, you will travel through cities and country and get the opportunity to get a glimpse of reality, not to mention the chance to take amazing photos (a photographer’s dream). One very noticeable daily practice you’ll undoubtedly observe is cycling which may be unsurprising due to the stringent laws of car ownership. Bikes while still, a privilege are one of the most accessible transportation options for ordinary Koreans, you’ll even see women cycling despite the conflicting reports on the practise being illegal.
Watching people ride bikes and utilize them will indeed be one of the most fascinating experiences. So, get your camera’s ready, sit back, and capture some of the coolest pictures of everyday life in the DPRK, OR why not take our bicycle tour and ride alongside?
