Introduction

Sariwon Folklore Park is located in the center of lively Sariwŏn the capital of North Hwanghae Province, North Korea.

The Folklore park represents Korea in its ancient times.

Here it is possible to recieve a tour from a local guide of painted maps that show Korea’s cultural and historical relics as well as a series of maps explaining the historical evolution of the Korean peninsula.

Grandma and Grandpa Makgeolli

The absolute highlight of visiting Sariwon Folklore Park, however, is the lovely old couple dubbed “Grandma and Grandpa Makgeolli” by our Local Korean Guides, YPT Staff and tourists alike because of the homebrewed Korean alcohol that they sell called Makgeolli.

Grandpa and Grandpa Makgeolli sit at the back of the folklore park in all seasons, serving their delicious homebrewed alcohol for 5 RMB for a sample or 10 RMB for a takeaway bottle.

They also rent out traditional Korean costumes so guests can take photos in traditional Korean attire against the ancient backdrop of the folklore park.

A few years ago while one of our YPT groups was visiting the folklore park, we were approached by a cameraman from Korea Today which is North Korea’s largest domestically produced foreign-language magazine. Our YPT was lucky enough to be featured in the magazine, which you can see in the photo below:

Mount Kynongnam

Mount Kynongnam is the backdrop to the Sariwon Folklore Park.

It is about a 10-minute walk to the top of the mountain where there is a pagoda that provides stunning views of Sariwon City and the surrounding area. Well worth the hike!

Visiting Sariwon Folklore Park

Sariwon Folklore Park is visited after a trip to the DMZ which happens on any of our North Korea Tours over 3 days in length.
