Young Pioneer Tours just embarked on an epic trip to Sudan, Bir Tawil, and South Sudan. To say we loved all three places would be doing a great disservice, all of them very much had their own charms and are worth a visit.

Today though, let’s concentrate on Sudan. Sudan is perhaps one of the most misunderstood countries in the world, and despite what you might have heard is currently very stable, and home to wonderful sites, sounds and people.

Here are our top 5 reasons why you visit Sudan.

5) The Food

Sudanese food might not be exactly famous on a world scale, but with a robust Arab Heritage, the food consists of excellent bread, beans, and goat! The Street Food is terrific, and there’s even a big egg building built by Gaddafi that serves fine dining Sudanese and Arab cuisine.

4) The People

• 

It sometimes feels like a cop-out of the lonely planet variety to talk about how friendly a people are, but Sudanese folks are really nice! We found the Sudanese to be very talkative and extremely welcoming. In many ways, our new local friends make the trip.

3) Camping in Sudan

• 

Camping outside in the middle of the desert, with the temperature being perfect, and a completely clear sky is unbeatable. I have never seen stars as I did in Sudan. If you like camping, you will love Sudan.

2) The Desert

• 

It is tough to explain what massive expanses of desert look like unless you have been. The solitude that driving (fast) through the endless desert is unimaginable.

1) The Pyramids

• 

Of course, Egypt might be slightly more famous for its Pyramids, but Sudan has as many pyramids as its northern neighbour, but without all the nonsense with litter and hawkers. It is hard to imagine you are at sites of such importance when you consider how few people that are there to see them. If you have more than a passing interest in Pyramids, get your arse to Sudan.
