When Will Transnistria Open Again
Transnistria is arguably one of the most popular destinations amongst our range of Soviet tours. Visiting the least visited region of Europe’s least visited country (Moldova) in search os Soviet relics is a big draw. However, since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Transnistria sealed its borders early and managed to keep infection rates to the bare minimum.
In February, on one of our ultra-budget Chernobyl and Transnistria tours, we bid farewell to Transnistria and headed towards an uncertain future as the virus spread across the world. Since then, the country has been closed for foreigners and for locals trying to leave. However, it’s possible that the end is in sight as a date has been given for the reassessment of the current restrictions.
According to Cenzura.md, an order has appeared on the website of the President of Transnistria to extend the current coronavirus restrictions towards travel to neighboring Moldova and Ukraine until December 1, 2020.
The new amendments completely exclude the previously introduced measures for “state support during the 2020 state of emergency”, and introduce the following changes:
“The right of a citizen of the Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublika to leave the Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublika may be temporarily limited.”
“The right of citizens of the Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublika to freedom of movement, choice of a place of stay and residence within the Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublika in accordance with the laws of the Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublika may be restricted throughout the entire territory of the Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublika or on its individual territories and settlements. “
This Law comes into force on the day following the day of its official publication and is valid until December 1, 2020.
Thus, it’s possible that the breakaway state we all know and love may shift towards reopening sometime after December 1. Stay tuned, and we’ll resume our unbeatable tours to the region when we can!
